Animating the Elements
This BCAA project came to us as a last-minute surprise and quickly became one of our favourite campaigns of the year.
For those of you who aren’t aware, the British Columbia Automobile Association—AKA BCAA—is one of the most leading insurance organizations in BC. They serve 1 in 3 BC households with industry-leading products including home, auto and travel insurance, roadside assistance, and full auto maintenance and repair at BCAA’s Auto Service Centres. They also own Evo Car Share, which happens to be another glowing animation accomplishment in our banner crowns!
As with so many other digital display projects we work on, there was the pressure of super quick turnarounds with super intricate animations. Luckily, that’s where we shine! We were able to leverage our dual-time-zoned teams and crush the looming deadlines on this project. And as far as the intricate animations went, that was where things got fun! We were able to cram all the necessary assets for the animations into units that were abiding by pretty standard display specs while maintaining visual integrity. Our special cocktail of banner-wonder!
These units were animated solely with HTML5, CSS, and Javascript with each individual asset hand-timed to create as close to life-like movements as we could get. Units that needed the effect of wind randomly blowing around leaves or lettering shaking off the wall in an earthquake, got handmade code to create that effect in order to save on the file size that would be taken up by an animation library.
Frames per second
These units were meant to look like they were done as stop-motion videos, so they’re done in only 24 frames per second (fps). This changes the way our developers work as units that are served as 24 fps are fluid but not quite as smooth as we’re used to seeing. Maintaining the stop-motion appearance meant that each and every asset must be in its proper place the entire time it’s on screen!
