It’s a BC Thing
Evo is a carsharing service in the Greater Vancouver area, created by the British Columbia Automobile Association. When Evo approached us to re-create their visually stunning TV spot in HTML5 it was not a simple task because at the time, the digital sphere was undergoing a radical shift from Flash to HTML5. In order to create stunning animated banners we mobilized our in-house illustrative/design team who were able to leverage a technology known as sprite sheets.
Sprite sheets are by no means a new technology. They have been used in the gaming industry for years to replicate video like animations without using video. Their appearance in digital display was a solution to the issue of media constraints. Basically, any unit that serves video is considered a rich media buy. Put simply, a rich media placement will cost the client much more than a standard media placement, and video units cannot be run on mobile phones.
The result is a seamless animation that runs smoothly on mobile or desktop, expanding exposure and increasing ROI for this forward-looking company.
Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’
Besides the very impressive sprite sheet animations, one of our favourite little animations in this unit is the Evo car that rolls in near the end. Instead of using CSS animation to push an image of a car across the screen, our animators separated the car image from the wheels and moved each piece individually. This attention to detail is what takes our animations to the next level, and makes our work a step above the rest. Good job, guys!
